System Software
System software is a type of computer software designed to facilitate the operation of computer hardware and provide a platform for running application software. It acts as an intermediary between the hardware components of a computer system and the user-facing application software. System software includes different essential devices/components, such as:
1.Operating System (OS):
- The core component of system software that manages computer hardware and provides essential services to application software.
- Controls hardware resources such as CPU, memory, storage devices, input/output (I/O) devices, and network interfaces.
- Provides features like process management, memory management, file system management, device management, and user interface (UI). Examples include Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian), Unix variants (FreeBSD, Solaris), and mobile operating systems like Android and iOS.
2.Device Drivers:
- Software components that is to be allow the operating system to communicate & control with hardware devices.
- Translate higher-level commands from the operating system into commands specific to the hardware device.
- Ensure proper functioning and compatibility of hardware devices with the operating system. Examples include drivers for graphics cards, sound cards, network adapters, printers, scanners, and storage devices.
3.Firmware:
- Software embedded into hardware devices that provides low-level control and basic functionality.
- Typically stored in non-volatile memory (e.g., ROM, EEPROM) and executed by the device's processor. Examples include BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) or UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) in computers, firmware in routers, modems, and embedded systems.
4.Utility Programs:
- Software tools designed to perform specific tasks related to system maintenance, optimization, and troubleshooting.
- Often bundled with the operating system or available as standalone applications. Examples include antivirus software, disk cleanup utilities, backup and recovery tools, disk partitioning software, system monitoring utilities, and diagnostic tools.
System software plays a critical role in managing the resources of a computer system, providing a stable and consistent environment for running application software, and ensuring efficient and reliable operation of the entire system. It serves as the foundation upon which application software can be built and executed, enabling users to perform various tasks and activities on their computers.
