Operating System:-
- OS(Operating System) is a System Software. which run the computer system.
- OS is a group of program that controls all the operation of computer system and its components.
- An operating of computer system is an integrated set of specialized programs that is used to manage the resources and overall operation of a computer.
- A computer can do nothing without operating system.
- Operating system must be installed on every computer. User interacts with computer through system.
- When computer is turned on, the operating system runs and checks that all parts of the computer are functioning properly.
- Operating system manages all operation on computer after loading.
- Some popular operating system is MS-DOS, UNIX, XENIX, LINUX, WINDOWS – 98/2000, and WINDOWS – XP etc.
Classification/ Types of Operating System
Operating system is classified according to the following criteria’s.
- Single-user Operating System
- Multi-user Operating System
- Time Shared System
Single-User Operating system are allows only one user to use at the Time. For Single User Operating System have to divided into two parts.
- Single user Single-task Operating System: In this Operating System only one task can be performed. i-e MS-DOS
- Single user Multi-task Operating System: In this Operating System more than one task can be performed. i-e XP, Me, 7,8,10,Golden, Vista
For example: LINUX, XENIX, UNIX, UBUNTU, Solaris, Windows server 2000/2008/2012
3. Time Shared System: It usually consists of a “dump” type terminal connected by data lines to a centralized Micro-Computer based system that controls all operations.
